Quit Smoking with Acupuncture

Smoking causes excessive health issues in the body.  With millions of smokers in the United States alone, it is one of the most addicting and hardest habits to kick.  Nicotine has additives that make people who use it want to use it more and more.  Side effects of withdrawal are unpleasant but short term.  Nicotine causes a short-term increase in blood pressure, heart rate and the flow of blood from the heart. It also causes the arteries to narrow. The smoke includes carbon monoxide, which reduces the amount of oxygen the blood can carry. This, combined with the nicotine effects, creates an imbalance between the demand for oxygen by the cells and the amount of oxygen the blood can supply.

In Chinese Medicine, smoking affects every organ in the body.  It evaporates the body fluids, blood and causes many imbalances.  Nicotine is stimulant that is hot/ toxic by nature.  Smoking depletes the body of blood which affects dries the sinuses and throat.  Long term smokers have a raspy voice and a “smoker’s cough”.   Chinese Medicine attributes smoking to also depleting the kidneys of “jing”.  Jing is a person’s essence of life force.  Translated jing is the life cycle of the body, mind and spirit.

Acupuncture has become very popular in treating addictions in the last few years.  Acupuncture is being incorporated into alcohol and drug rehabilitation centers, not because it is trendy, but because it works.  Research has proven that the incorporation of acupuncture in any addiction treatment doubles the success rate.

Along with acupuncture, cupping may be used to detox the body faster.  Cupping draws out impurities and helps cut the physical effects of withdraw to a minimum.  Chinese herbal formulas can be added to assist with the emotional attachments, low energy and side effects of withdraw. Nutritional supplements can also be a big help with mood swings and energy.   Along with clinical applications, there are several food options that when incorporated into the detox process, help the organs repair faster.

There are many options for people who want to quit smoking.  As difficult as it can be to quit, the more tools that you have, the easier the process becomes.
